Back-to-School Wisdom

Summer fun seems like it had just begun when suddenly, it’s  time  to  start  thinking  about  back  to  school.   Every year,  parents  and  children  prepare  for the  return  to  school in August and September. While you are shopping for new clothing and supplies, ensure your child has everything needed health wise to start the year off right. Here is a list of things to consider:

  1. Imm unizations. Certain vaccines are required for childcare and school entry. Check with your primary care provider for details . An exception is made for religious beliefs or if a child has had a documented allergic reaction or medical  condition that prevents receiving certain vaccines. It  is  important  to have an official copy of the immunization record or exemption; otherwise your child may not be admitted on the first day of school. No insurance? No problem. Local health departments provide vaccines for children up to age 18, at no cost.
  2. Physical Exams. An updated physical is required for kindergarten entry and possibly at other times if the child  is new to the school district. If your child plays sports, a sports physical is due annually. Ifthe school or team requires special documentation , have that with you during the physical.  In many communities, local physicians and organizations  offer free sports physicals at the beginning of the school year. Ifyou don’t have insurance, this may be an option for you.
  3. Medications. Don’t forget to refill medications! Ifyour child has a diagnosis such as asthma, diabetes, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it is important to always have medications on hand, and ensure your child has appropriate follow up care. Most importantly, use wisdom, plan ahead, and don’t procrastinate . Have a wonderful and prosperous summer, and new school year. “I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
